6 Things Every Woman Needs To Know About Endometriosis

Endometriosis is one of the leading gynecological problem women face in the world today. Unfortunately, not many people know about this health condition.

We have compiled a list of 6 things everyone, especially women, should know about endometriosis.

1. What is Endometriosis?
It is a condition that occurs when tissue similar to the inner lining of the womb (also known as endometrium) which is supposed to grow inside the womb is found somewhere else; usually in the pelvic area around the womb, ovaries and fallopian tubes. The growth outside of the uterus means that bleeding will occur outside of the uterus, leading to inflammation of those organs.

2. Diagnosis Takes an Average of 7.5 years
It takes on average seven years and a half to get endometriosis diagnosed. This is because every woman experience endometriosis differently so there is not really a strict set of signs and symptoms which can quickly help to make an accurate diagnosis.

Also, the symptoms of endometriosis are very similar to other health conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease hence health practitioners may be hesitant or find it difficult to diagnose.

3. Signs and Symptoms of Endometriosis
They include ‘killer’ cramps, long or extremely heavy periods, fatigue, diarrhea, painful bowel movement, leg pain, nausea, severe migraines, etc.

4. It Has No Cure
Although there is no cure yet for endometriosis, there are treatment options that can help to alleviate the symptoms. Some of these options are pain medicines, birth control pills, and hormone therapy.

5. Lifestyle Changes Can Help Relieve Symptoms
Changes in lifestyle like exercising and watching what one eats can relieve some of the symptoms associated with endometriosis. Cutting out beef, pork, and other red meats from one’s diet as well as staying away from alcohol can reduce the effect of the symptoms on our bodies. Green, leafy vegetables and omega‐3 fatty acids are also very beneficial.

6. Endometriosis Can Lead to Infertility
It happens if the tissue growing out of the uterus makes a scar on the fallopian tubes, blocking a sperm from meeting an egg. It can also cause infertility when in certain instances, it blocks a fertilized egg from being implanted in the uterine lining.
